			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the first things that you’ll do when you decide to lose weight is to set a goal weight. For most, that goal will be their ‘ideal weight’, but for many, that ‘ideal weight’ may be exactly the wrong weight for them to be aiming for. </p>
<p>Years of dieting or being overweight have the physiological effect of moving the body’s concept of the ‘ideal weight’ from what is truly considered ideal. The ‘set point’ is the weight at which your body naturally feels most comfortable. If you’ve been overweight for a very long time, or if you’ve consistently ‘yo-yoed’, your body may respond to your initial weight loss by lowering its metabolism because it believes that you are starving to death. This slowing leads to discouraging plateaus that often knock people off their diets entirely, and lead to regaining all or part of the lost weight. </p>
<p>Instead of aiming for an ‘ideal weight’ that calls for you to lose weight steadily for months or even years, many experts recommend aiming for shorter-term attainable goals. Since the bulk of diet research shows that most dieters lose weight steadily for about 12 weeks, then hit a plateau, that’s the number that they suggest you aim for. The strategy that many have found works best for them is one of alternating periods of weight loss and maintenance, each lasting 8-12 weeks. </p>
<p>Choose a realistic amount of weight that you can lose in 8-12 weeks. Figuring that the most reasonable and healthiest weight loss rate is 1-2 pounds per week, 30 pounds in three months is not unreasonable. Diet until you reach that goal, or for 12 weeks, whichever comes first, and then switch to a maintenance diet. </p>
<p>Why switch to a maintenance diet at that point? In part, you’re giving yourself a ‘breather’, a break from more restrictive eating. The other part, though, is that you’re re-educating your body and letting it establish a new ‘set point’. Once you’ve maintained your new weight for 8-12 weeks, set another weight loss goal, and move back into weight loss mode. By giving your body a break from ‘starvation’, you’ll have overcome its resistance to losing more weight, and be back to dieting for ‘the first two weeks’ – the weeks that most people lose weight more rapidly. </p>
<p>You’ll also be giving yourself a chance to ‘practice’ maintaining your new, healthier weight. Researchers have found that more than half of the dieters who take off significant amounts of weight do not maintain that weight loss once they go ‘off’ their diet. By practicing weight maintenance in stages, you’ll be proving to yourself that you CAN do it, and removing a powerful negative psychological block. </p>
<p>This will work with any long-term weight loss diet, no matter the focus. You’ll find it much easier to do if you choose a diet that has concrete ‘phases’, like the South Beach or the Atkins, since the weight loss and maintenance phases are clearly laid out for you to follow. Regardless of the diet you choose, though, by alternating between weight loss phases and maintenance phases, you’ll teach yourself and your body how to maintain a healthy weight. </p>

Overweight people do have higher risks of heart disease, hypertension, stroke, and diabetes. If you ask me, those are some pretty compelling reasons to make a commitment to shed some pounds now. But perhaps you’re a bit cynical about the whole dieting process because of failed attempts in the past. That’s certainly understandable, and I can empathize with you . However, you’re health is too important to just give up completely. Instead, maybe it’s time you took a look at some weight loss products that can help you slim down. </p>

<p>Remember that you ideal body weight has more to do with health then anything else. This means that the weight that is ideal for you is one that is good for your heart and your long term health. This has nothing to do with how you will look in a swimming suit, but the closer you are to this ideal body weight you are, the better you are going to look. You may not think it’s perfect, but it is important to know that your ideal weight will help ensure you are around to watch your children and your grandchildren grow up. </p>

The fact is that each person is likely to have his or her own idea about what a healthy weight range is. This is fuelled, in part, by the constant barrage of “thin, thinner, and thinnest” messages to which we are all exposed. Of course, these messages are in direct conflict with the reality of the $900+ billion food industry. </p>
<p>Consider that most human beings are able to thrive on around 2,000 calories or fewer per day. This is in direct conflict with the fact that the almost one trillion dollar food industry produces over 3,800 daily calories for every man, woman, and child in the United States. It is not any wonder that six in every ten adult Americans are overweight at present. The most popular measure of whether an individual is overweight or obese is known as BMI (Body Mass Index). </p>
<p>BMI is a ratio of your height and your weight and is a measure for overweight and obesity. BMI is calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by their height in meters, squared. I tend to be ‘metrically challenged’, if you are, you simply divide your current weight by your height converted into inches (and then shift the decimal one place to the left). For example, If you are 188 pounds and 5’10” or 70 inches tall. Therefore, 188 divided by 7.0 equals a BMI of 26.9. Therefore, according to the BMI chart, you would be considered overweight. Currently, your BMI is greater than 24.9, the line of demarcation between the upper limit of the normal weight range. We live in a modern society that focuses on weight in what can only be described as obsessed with size and weight. All of this is playing itself out against the backdrop of sub-100 pound starlets in a celebrity obsessed culture. </p>
<p>According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Weight Control Information Network, I should weigh 157 pounds. I want to provide some context for how “unrealistic” 157 pounds is for me. As a very active 16 year old two-sport athlete, I weighed 165 pounds (more than four decades ago). </p>
<p>Some years ago, I completed an experiment where I fasted on water for 15 consecutive days. At the end of this 15 day period, I weighed 169 pounds. The point here is that I likely will have to be dead and rotting in the ground for two full weeks before my weight will ever reach the 174 pound mark of 24.9 on the BMI scale, much less the completely ridiculous 157 pounds. </p>
<p>This brings us back to the initial question of what is your ‘ideal’ weight. Each of us, regardless of current weight, has the same ideal weight range. This is the weight range that is likely to result in our greatest longevity. In other words, what weight will result in your living the longest? Whether you are young or mature, large or small, left-hanged or right-handed, most of us share this same healthy weight range, a BMI of 26-28. In the Obesity Myth, an analysis of actual life-spans revealed that those persons with BMI between 26 and 28, lived longer than other lower BMI. So, for me, my healthy weight range is between 182 and 196 pounds. Get a calculator and figure out what your healthy weight range is and then find a way to live within that range. </p>

When the body detects a sweet taste, it expects carbohydrates that contain nutrition, and when the gut finds no nutrition, the message is sent to the brain to eat more in order to get the nutrition needed. </p>
<p>The FDA has had more complaints about Aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal, Canderel, NatraSweet, Spoonfuls, DiabetiSweet) than any other food additive, and yet it is still on the GRAS list (Generally Regarded As Safe) despite its strong association with brain tumours and seizures. It is a synthetic compound made up of Phenylalanine and Aspartic Acid held in a chemical bond by Methanol, which breaks down into Formic Acid, Formaldehyde and Diketopiperazine (DKP). It is the DKP that causes brain tumours. Aspartame breaks down more quickly with heat, and as such, is worse in hot drinks, or in soda pop that may have been in the sun at some point in its journey to our fridges. If you have ever tasted a diet drink that didn’t taste sweet, you know the Aspartame in it broke down into the above mentioned neurotoxins (nerve poisons). Some symptoms of Aspartame toxicity include migraines, depression, seizures, attention deficit disorder, angry rages, joint pain, muscle spasm, and it can mimic diseases like MS, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia. Symptoms like migraines may appear quickly in some people, while in others there may be no symptoms for some time. If you or someone you care about has any of these symptoms, remove Aspartame from the diet for four to six weeks before medical testing to see if the symptoms resolve, and so that the artificial sweetener won’t cloud the diagnosis. Once again, read labels, because Aspartame is everywhere, including children’s vitamins, cool aid type fruit drinks, diet soda pop, sugar free chewing gum, gelatin desserts, frozen desserts, fillings and toppings for baked goods, hot chocolate mixes, breath mints, yogurt, wine coolers, tea beverages, some flavoured bottled waters, some fibre cereals, cold remedies and other medications. Mary Nash Stoddard compiled the research on Aspartame into a report that she titled Deadly Deception: Story of Aspartame : Shocking Expose of the World’s Most Controversial Sweetener, if you are interested in looking into this subject further. </p>
<p>Sucralose, under the brand name of Splenda, is gaining in popularity as a substitute for sugar. Because this product is newer there is less research to look at, but what is there should give pause for thought. It is advertised as being made from sugar, but that does not mean it is anything like sugar, just as water in no way resembles the oxygen and hydrogen from which it is made. To make sucralose, three chlorine atoms are substituted for three oxygen-hydrogen groups on the sugar molecule turning it into a chlorocarbon. Chlorocarbons have been known to cause genetic, organ, immune and reproductive damage for some time, and they cause swelling of the liver as well as swelling and calcification of the kidneys. If you get any mid-back pain in the kidney area or bladder irritation after consuming Splenda, take it out of your diet immediately. </p>

<p>Exercise strengthens bones and muscles, improves mental health and mood, lowers blood pressure, improves cholesterol levels and reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, breast cancer and colon cancer. Exercise is also good for your brain. </p>
<p>It may not be a cure-all for obesity, however. </p>
<p>Though better nutrition coupled with exercise has long been the favoured prescription for losing weight and avoiding obesity, a 2008 study suggests diet actually plays the key role. </p>
<p>Researchers from Loyola University Health System and other centres compared African American women in metropolitan Chicago with women in rural Nigeria. On average, the Chicago women weighed 184 pounds and the Nigerian women weighed 127 pounds. </p>
<p>The researchers had expected to find that the slimmer Nigerian women would be more physically active. To their surprise, they found no significant difference between the two groups in the amount of calories burned during physical activity. </p>
<p>&quot;Decreased physical activity may not be the primary driver of the obesity epidemic,&quot; said Loyola nutritionist Amy Luke, a member of the study team. </p>
<p>Burn more, eat more </p>
<p>U.S. government guidelines state that each week, adults need at least 2 ½ hours of moderate aerobic activity (such as brisk walking) or 75 minutes of vigorous activity (such as jogging). Adults also should do muscle-strengthening activities, such as weight-lifting or sit-ups, at least twice a week. </p>
<p>The benefits to overall health are clear. Exercise has even been shown to improve kids&#8217; academic performance. </p>
<p>People burn more calories when they exercise. Thing is, they compensate by eating more, said Richard Cooper, co-author of the study and chairman of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology. </p>
<p>&quot;We would love to say that physical activity has a positive effect on weight control, but that does not appear to be the case,&quot; Cooper said. </p>
<p>Diet differences </p>
<p>Diet is a more likely explanation than physical activity expenditure for why Chicago women weigh more than Nigerian women, Luke said. She noted the Nigerian diet is high in fiber and carbohydrates and low in fat and animal protein. By contrast, the Chicago diet is 40 percent to 45 percent fat and high in processed foods. </p>
<p>More research seems to be needed, however, as the new finding conflicts with other studies. A study in the September issue of the journal Archives of Internal Medicine found that Old Order Amish people who had a gene related to obesity stayed thin nonetheless because they exercised a lot. </p>
<p>Yet results of the 2008 study are similar to those of a 2007 study of men and women in Jamaica. Researchers from Loyola and other centres found there was no association between weight gain and calories burned during physical activity. </p>
<p>&quot;Evidence is beginning to accumulate that dietary intake may be more important than energy expenditure level,&quot; Luke said. &quot;Weight loss is not likely to happen without dietary restraint.&quot; </p>
<p>The results, announced in a statement from the university today, were published in the September 2008 issue of the journal Obesity. </p>
<p>Other centres involved in the study include University of Ibadan in Nigeria, Howard University, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and University of Wisconsin. </p>

However it is also the responsibility of individuals to fight with the problem at their own. What can they do? </p>
<p>People will have to change their life style to combat the obesity problem. They will have to make their daily routine disciplined. They will have to change their luxury habits. They will have to learn to walk on the foot. They will have to do daily physical exercises. They will have to give up junk food. <p>4 million Americans weigh in at over 300 pounds, so is it any wonder that many are desperate to lose weight but are having trouble. One such cause for the ever increasing need to buy larger clothes is a disease known as Syndrome X. </p>
<p>Syndrome X is also referred to as Metabolic Syndrome, Metabolic Syndrome X and Insulin Resistance. It is a very common disease; however it is widely overlooked by many medical professionals. One statistic reveals 1 in 3 people suffer from it. </p>
<p>This syndrome is a precursor to developing Diabetes Type 2. Sufferers have a high level of insulin. Their bodies are unable to process all the insulin that is being made from their diet. As a result, they become insulin resistant. </p>
<p>Think of it like this: You knock on someone’s door because you want to come in. If they don’t answer, what normally happens? You knock again, right? Sometimes you may even knock a third time, trying to gain entry. Insulin works in the same manner. The pancreas produces insulin (knock). Some foods cause the body to produce even higher levels of insulin (knock again). Once you become insulin resistant, develop Syndrome X, the body is unable to properly process the glucose, therefore the pancreas tries to make up for it by producing even more insulin. It thinks “no one is home” and just keeps making more. </p>
<p>The main purpose of glucose is to be used as fuel for the cells in the body to produce energy. Unprocessed glucose translates into fat. If the body keeps making it and it’s not being processed, where does it go? Hips, thighs, stomach, and buttocks, that’s where! </p>
<p>In addition to hypertension and heart disease, elevated insulin may be associated with weight gain and difficulty with weight loss, other blood sugar problems such as hypoglycemia, and some menstrual related imbalances. </p>
<p>Genetics is partially responsible for causing this disease. More likely though is lifestyle. In many cases years of high starch, processed foods, simple sugars, lack of exercise, smoking, and increased stress may be the culprit for Metabolic Syndrome X. </p>
<p>Now what? For starters, start exercising today. Increase water intake and totally omit starches, sugars, processed foods from your diet. Limit or omit caffeine. Try to maintain at least one third of your daily food intake from vegetables. Ask your doctor to test your sugar levels. Change what you’re eating and get walking and you’ll be amazed at the pounds start to fall off. The fatigue and fuzziness will start to disappear and in turn you’ll feel much better. </p>

<p>&quot;I have also been suffering from horrible neck and shoulder pain for the past eight months. I contribute my problem to a past injury – a car accident in 1997. For the past few months I started a treatment plan with my chiropractor. I stopped going due to scheduling problems, and began taking Nopalea™. I woke up this past Sunday and was completely pain-free. I thought I must have had a really good night’s sleep. I can honestly say that lately I have had minimal pain and I can sleep soundly. I do not wince in pain if I roll over in bed. I was taking 800 mgs of Ibuprofen – which my health care provider had suggested, because you need that amount to reduce the inflammation in your neck and shoulder. On my painful days I would take 800 mgs Ibuprofen in the morning, mid-afternoon and evenings. Taking that much Ibuprofen is not so good for the kidneys! You can&#8217;t imagine how wonderful it feels to sleep without pain, to not have to take Ibuprofen all day long and to be able to work at my computer without horrible pain. </p>

<p>Have you heard of The Glycemic Index: (GI)? </p>
<p>I get questions about this all the time &#8230; is the GI really the best guideline or criteria for choosing carbs? The (correct) answer might surprise you&#8230; </p>
<p>The glycemic index (GI) ranks foods on a scale from 1 to 100 based on how much the blood sugar increases after each food is consumed. In particular, the index is concerned with carbohydrates because fats and proteins have little effect on blood sugar levels. The higher the number, the greater the increase in blood sugar. </p>
<p>The GI has recently attracted a lot of attention in the bodybuilding, fitness, and weight-loss world. Many popular weight-loss diets base their entire program on the index as their primary criteria for choosing carbohydrates. </p>
<p>According to advocates of the GI system, foods that are high on the scale such as rice cakes, carrots, potatoes, or grape juice are &quot;unfavourable&quot; and should be avoided because they are absorbed so rapidly and are therefore more likely to convert to fat. Instead, you are urged to consume carbohydrates that are low on the GI such as black-eyed peas, oatmeal, peanuts, apples, and beans (all good foods, by the way). </p>
<p>Foods with a high GI increase insulin output more than those with a lower GI. Because high levels of insulin are associated with increased fat storage and suppressed fat burning, it is hypothesized that eating high GI foods can make you fatter than eating low GI foods. </p>
<p>Low GI foods are thought to reduce fat storage because they cause slower release of sugar into the bloodstream and therefore less insulin production. </p>
<p>While the GI should be given consideration in your carbohydrate choices, it&#8217;s not a good idea to make it your only criteria for choosing carbs. The mistake in strictly adhering to the GI to dictate all your carb choices is that the index is based on carbohydrates being eaten by themselves in a fasting state &#8230; and as I&#8217;m sure you know by now, that&#8217;s a problem in of itself. </p>
<p>An effective fat-burning and/or muscle-preserving/building diet is always based on combining carbs and protein together &#8211; this is very important. When carbs are eaten in mixed meals that contain protein and small amounts of fat, the glycemic index loses its significance, because the protein and fat slow the absorption of the carbohydrates. </p>
<p>For example, mashed potatoes have a GI that is near that of pure glucose, but if you combine the potatoes with a chicken breast and vegetables, the GI of the entire meal is much lower than the potato by itself. Rice cakes also have a high GI. But if you spread a little peanut butter on them, the fat slows the absorption of the carbs, thereby lowering the GI of the combination. </p>
<p>A fat-burning and/or muscle-preserving/building diet is also based on eating small frequent meals that are spaced out 2.5 &#8211; 3 hours apart. This also lowers the significance of the GI because on such an eating schedule, you are never eating at a truly fasted state, except for breakfast (i.e after 8 hours of sleep). </p>
<p>So, as you can see, if you&#8217;re including a good protein source at each meal, and you&#8217;re eating small meals frequently throughout the day (4 to 5 meals, every 2.5 &#8211; 3 hours),the carb&#8217;s GI is much less of a concern. </p>

<p>Sonoran Bloom Tour Update </p>
<p>63 people attend a Buffet luncheon which launched Sonoran Bloom Nopalea in Orlando hosted by Michael Ellison, local affiliates shared the Sonoran Bloom experience with others. A Number of new Affiliates were signed up after the luncheon </p>
<p>Mitch Lover a top distributor attended the luncheon with 7 guests and they were so impressed with the product and the testimonial of one affiliate who recounted a story of paying forward and giving someone who had type 2 diabetes, and was in great pain before trying Nopalea, and after 5 days the pain and tenderness has decreased and she is now able to exercise with out pain. All seven people signed up. </p>
<p>This was the the first of 25 cities in a tour and this evening there was a number of other guest where members of the public were be able to learn about and sample the new Nopalea drink extracted from the Nopal Cactus which grows in the Sonora Desert in the SW USA. </p>

<p>How much should we walk to lose weight or to maintain fitness? A good rule of thumb is you must take 12,000 &#8211; 15,000 steps a day to lose weight. It takes about 10,000 steps a day to maintain fitness. Obviously fewer steps mean you are neither losing or maintaining. Any amount of walking is good. For the best health results set a brisk walking pace for 30 minutes at least 5 times a week. </p>
<p>How can we get started? Like all exercise programs there are some great ideas to get us going. The first suggestion is to buy a pedometer so you can measure how many steps you take each day. They are readily available and affordable. There are two great options available at I Spy I Buy &#8211; take a look. Some even help count calories. It is easy to calibrate your pedometer. Count the number of steps taken over a known distance and do a little math. A quarter mile track at a local school are easy places to calibrate your step length. </p>
<p>Next we have to plan our schedules to incorporate walking. Start slowly and build up to your target level. Easy ways to add walking to your schedule is to walk with friends, a loved one or your family dog. Its a wonderful way to spend quality time and get healthy. </p>
<p>If you look at the benefits of walking they read like the wild claims of a snake oil salesman. Its easy to do. Costs very little. And it works. </p>

<p>The health benefits from simply walking are startling. Did you know that walking 10,000 steps a day is roughly equivalent to the Surgeon General’s recommendation that we all get 30 minutes of vigorous exercise five times a week? Study after study shows regular walkers have less incidence of cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other killer diseases. In addition walkers live longer and enjoy mental health and spiritual benefits. With little or no equipment investment everyone can walk. </p>
<p>According to AARP these are some of the benefits: </p>
<p>Managing your weight. Combined with healthy eating, physical activity is key to any plan for long-lasting weight control. Keeping your weight within healthy limits can lower your risks of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis. </p>
<p>Controlling your blood pressure. Physical activity strengthens the heart so it can pump more blood with less effort and with less pressure on the arteries. Staying fit is just as effective as some medications in keeping down blood pressure levels. </p>
<p>Decreasing your risk of heart attack. Exercise such as brisk walking for three hours a week — or just half an hour a day — is associated with a 30% to 40% lower risk of heart disease in women. (Based on the 20-year Nurses’ Health Study of 72,000 female nurses.) </p>
<p>Boosting “good” cholesterol – the level of high-density lipoproteins (HDL). Physical activity helps reduce low-density lipoproteins (LDL or “bad” cholesterol) in the blood, which can cause plaque build-up along the artery walls — a major cause of heart attacks. </p>
<p>Lowering your risk of stroke. Regular, moderate exercise equivalent to brisk walking for an hour a day, five days a week, can cut the risk of stroke in half, according to a Harvard study of more than 11,000 men. </p>
<p>Reducing your risk of breast cancer and type 2 diabetes. The Nurses’ Health Study also links regular activity to risk reductions for both these diseases. In another study, people at high risk of diabetes cut their risk in half by combining consistent exercise like walking with lower fat intake and a 5% to 7% weight loss. </p>
<p>Avoiding your need for gallstone surgery. Regular walking or other physical activity lowers the risk of needing gallstone surgery by 20% to 31%, found a Harvard study of more than 60,000 women ages 40 to 65. </p>
<p>Protecting against hip fracture. Consistent activity diminishes the risk of hip fracture, concludes a study of more than 30,000 men and women ages 20 to 93. </p>
</p>
<p>The list goes on and on. Many other studies indicate a daily brisk walk also can help: </p>
<ul>
<li>Prevent depression, colon cancer, constipation, osteoporosis, and impotence </li>
<li>Lengthen lifespan </li>
<li>Lower stress levels </li>
<li>Relieve arthritis and back pain </li>
<li>Strengthen muscles, bones, and joints </li>
<li>Improve sleep </li>
<li>Elevate overall mood and sense of well-being. </li>

<p>One in four Americans are sugar sensitive (insulin resistant) and many don’t even know it. An astounding 6 million people in the United States have type 2 diabetes and that number is growing exponentially each year. So many people are at risk for this life altering disease unnecessarily. With a small amount of knowledge diabetes can be avoided all together. </p>
<ul>
<li>Have you been told you are diabetic (or at risk for diabetes, have pre-diabetes or insulin resistance) and need to lose weight? </li>

<p>You have the power to set up your body to be an unattractive environment for diabetes. This is often referred to as Biological Terrain Management. This means creating a favourable environment for your body so all your normal bodily functions can occur easily, without stress and optimally function. </p>
<p>So what is the best terrain for a body? &#8212; An alkaline one! </p>
<p>During your life your body becomes a toxic dumping ground. Each time you are exposed to chemicals and toxins in the environment, additives in your foods, rub toxic chemicals on your skin, the toxic load of your body increases. This pushes your system to an acidic state. </p>
<p>Human bodies, in their wonderful way, are designed to detoxify systems naturally through the liver, kidneys, and digestive track. However, eventually your body systems become overloaded. And as your systems overload then the pH (acid/alkaline) balance of your bodies becomes more acidic. </p>
<p>The acid environment prevents many normal chemical reactions from occurring or from occurring effectively. Remember basic chemistry? The proper environment is necessary for chemical reactions to occur. </p>
<p>Bodies that are acidic often have depressed immune systems. Acidic environments lead to arthritic conditions and premature aging. For the diabetic an acidic body leads to the inability to utilize insulin properly and maintain stable blood sugar levels. </p>
<p>So what is the connection between diabetes and weight loss? </p>
<p>Simply this…an acidic biological environment is a body in stress. A body in stress will not let go of weight. The body will hold on to the weight for dear life. This sets many diabetics up for failure with weight loss and leaves you feeling discouraged at best but more often hopeless. </p>
